Night Owl

One of the few good things of having a completely out of whack body-clock is that you tend to catch those great shows that the television programmers here just don't seem to know how to place. Boston Legal has been coming on later and later, but its worth staying up cos just afterward is the magnificent 30 Rock. I highly recommend you get the entire season on DVD. So, so funny.

Everything's coming up roses

Amazingly this florist posts Australia wide. I love how their arrangements are so simple and classic and that they send plants too.

Oops

Somebody bring me a new pair of pants.

I was having a bit of a browse through Overheard in New York and came across this
You Have Chosen Wisely
Lady: Do you sell falafel?
Vendor: Ah! Falafel is gyro, gyro is falafel!
Lady: Falafel is chick peas. Gyro is meat.
Vendor: Falafel is bullshit!
Lady: I'll have a gyro.

It immediately reminded me of my boss, who is vegetarian and loves to get felafels when we have Greek for lunch at work. So, I used the link above it and emailed it to her with this as the attached comment
I saw this and immediately thought of you.

Only problem is, that link wasn't for that comment, it was for this one
A Sociopolitical Justification for Post-Modern Man's Thirst for Pee?
American grad student: Should I be in a fetish video?
French grad student: What would be the point?
American grad student: What do you mean? It's a fetish video.
French grad student: But what would be the point? What's the thesis?

When I was one, I had just begun

My friends have just started having the babies and although it scares the bejesus out of moi, these new little people are such a wonderful mix of their parents that you can't help but fall in love with them. It also means you can go hang out in the kids section and not be accused of getting clucky. So, anytime I come across something bub-related, I stash the idea for when it will be most age appropriate. I almost bought a pair of size 7 dinosaur gumboots(!) for my fave little 6 month old last week,

but sense prevailed and I came out with a rubber duck instead.

Now first birthdays will start coming up soon and I found the sweetest idea, via coco+kelley, on Kelley Moore's blog. Grossly paraphrasing here, she suggests having all the guests write words of wisdom and have them place their knowledge in a music box for the birthday baby to open on their 16th birthday. I think that's just lovely.

If Polaroids weren't almost a thing of the past, it would be just the thing to capture the baby and birthday wellwisher together and have them pop their thoughts on the bottom of the photo so your son and daughter could see how much fun everyone was having at "their" 1st birthday party. Can you imagine them all framed? Perfect!

Heaven, bottled

This is so yummy, I wanted to keep nibbling my wrist after begging the Guerlain lady to squirt me with the last bit of the sample left in DJs. Apparently its "sold out". I think she has squirreled away a stockpile for herself for all her summer parties. Hell, that's what I'd do - especially if i was working behind one of those counters; the mixture of creams and potions and perfume clouds you'd inhale in one day, you could fly home (neatly avoiding the security guards and safely stowing your stash of Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basilic)

Ruth Tuck

My Grandma, Sal, is a beautiful artist. When she was younger she was selected for an art scholarship, but she was unable to attend as there was a polio outbreak. Although the schools were finally allowed to re-open and she would have still been permitted to attend, she had found herself a job in the meantime and was reluctant to give up her wage as she felt she was helping her family. The judge who awarded her the prize was Ruth Tuck.
Ruth Tuck was born in 1914 in Cowell and in the most productive period of her career concentrated on flower paintings, portraits and landscapes. She founded an art school and there is a scholarship which provides funds for artists' further study that is in her name. There is an auction of her watercolours and drawings, this Sunday, at Small and Whitfield in Parkside and I think I am going to have to send someone down to bid for me.

I would like to bid for the cornflowers for Sal or the Sturt Desert Pea as it was my late grandfather's favourite flower and perhaps a pair of the musos for me (the others are all a bit out of my price range, otherwise the flowers overlooking the bluff would be mine). I love the portrait of the wrinkly old man as well - so much character. I am going to check them out tomorrow, so hopefully I can make a better decision in the flesh.

Bag Lady

This is a Japanese cedar purse, on sale for $175 from Rose and Radish. I can just tell it wants to come home with me.

Extreme

Last year I drove down to the country to visit my friend who had just had a baby (I might just add here that this little man is the most gorgeous thing I have ever seen and will have me driving the 400km round trip to see him at the drop of a hat). Anyhoo, being the exhausted new mother that she was, she had to go to bed early and being the night owl that I am, I got to stay up with her husband and a couple of his mates. Now, these guys are all top blokes and I really enjoy their company, but I do not understand their obsession with motorbikes. We spent the rest of the night drinking nice wine and watching the "helmet cam" videos of them jumping and racing over the sand-hills of Robe. I think the main protagonist, Lachie, needs this jumper. It is ace.

Pipsicle

My house is freezing today.
I need this, in all its cashmere goodness - $89.95 from here and for my emo alter ego(say that five times fast!) - only $14.95 from here, but it's tiny. Maybe for my little Bella's emo alter ego.
This one can be for Kimberlalee when she is visiting - she loves her Happy Feet, but her home is much too stylish for this, $14.95 from here
She can have this one at her own home, $49.95 from here

Call me Ishmael

Picture from plantsandanimals

With apologies to Melville, I have decided to kick off this blog with a bit of blatant plagiarism – it is the greatest opening line ever written after all, it seems wrong not to nick it.

Moby Dick seems an appropriate first posting for me. I’ve read it once before, but it was such a long time ago. To re-read it is on my to-do list. As was starting this blog. That’s one ticked off.

It also brings me directly to one of my greatest loves

ebay

I worship at its altar. ebay opens up the world to this sheltered little Adelaide girl.

I just bought
this because I think it’s just great. It brightens up my hallway and my day.

My plan hereon is to share with you more of my loves, things I find funny and just the stuff that is running through my head. There is a character in Moby Dick Called Pippin (Pip for short – just like me) and Pip is a little crazy. I hope to bring a bit of this too.

So,

At last the anchor was up, the sails were set, and off we glided.

Chapter 22, "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville
