Do you ever mix up your metaphors, confuse your colloquialisms or have lyrical lapses?

My flatmate and I have a new visitor to our house. His name is John West.
John West's name must always be uttered in full - "John West".
John West was named after he got to eat the good tuna (it was Sirena actually - so full of unfishy deliciousness that it makes me understand how someone can think that tuna is chicken).

Everytime he drops by, I immediately think of the old Gilette shavers' tagline and add in his name;

"John West, the best a man can get".
This is annoying because I know it is wrong and yet I think it every time I say his name. Grrrr.

Last night I thought I might have overcome this. Our neighbour knocked on our door looking for her lost cat. John West was sitting next to me on the couch and she jumped with joy at finding him.

Except it wasn't him.
It was her.
And her name was Ophelia.

Ophelia! What kind of name is Ophelia? It certainly is no John West, that's for sure.

So I have taken a stand and when visiting our house, Ophelia is John West and the will be no mention of shaving or pussies.

I think addiction may be too strong a word, yet I am not sure how else to describe the attachment I feel to the new Cyanide and Happiness app on my phone. It is my reward at work when I finish a task. It takes all my self control to stifle the guffaws at my desk.

I am getting a touch concerned though.

Moving on to the fact that I have a bit of a potty mouth and tend to always say the wrong thing...

The New Fluffy Duck

So....
When I first saw this I thought it was a picture of a duck farting.

Apparently it is a peacock.

I have, in my time, seen a duck fart turn into a peacock.

Here is how the transformation began.

Drinker sat at a bar with a shot glass layered with Kahlua, then Baileys, then Canadian Club. This was quickly consumed then followed by several more, then several more. At this point, said drinker not only felt better looking, but assumed everyone round them was much prettier too.

Where once sat ducks, now sat Peacocks.

One can only assume that there would have been quite a few duck farts consumed before the marriage of Jordan and Peter Andre and also when deciding this outfit was the way to go.

I've just moved and am in the process of procuring a new bed.

In the meantime, a la student days, I have a mattress on the floor.

I like to think I'm eschewing the western way and taking on the Eastern aesthetic in my sleeping choice, but calling it my futon always brings to mind the bed/couch owned at one stage by the lovely KB; the "futon to root on", as coined by her delightful flatmate, so I am happy calling it my mattress.

The room itself seems confused by the inclusion of the mattress alone and, with its high, shuttered window, is lending itself to comparisons with a detention centre. As my new place of rest, I think it deserves a more charming association.

Soooo, in the meantime, I am toying with the idea of a tent.

I was thinking along the lines of the one in "The Holiday" (as above). Without all the dolls of course. That would just be creepy. I kinda like the idea of it closing you off to the world when you sleep.

But, the truth is, I don't camp in whatever form, unless its 3am at the Mars Bar dancing to Kylie, so the floor mattress is about as close to roughing it as I go.

I will instead bow to the wisdom that is apartment therapy and just try to work it as is, like below, clean and uncluttered, with big pillows and good bedding (I have an awesome new quilt so that should help).

PS. If, because of Saturday afternoon drinks, the tent does go ahead, I will make sure I am always packing scroggin.

I was getting ready for work the other day and, due to some clothing issues I have been having lately, realised I didn’t have a single skirt or clean pair of trousers to wear. So, I headed to the only shop I knew that would be open at 8am and still give me enough time to not be late for work. Safe in the knowledge that the store would be relatively unoccupied, I proceeded to enter said store to nab me a pencil skirt, feeling quite a bit risqué in my shirt, stockings and a pair of boots.

All I can say is I am soooooo embarassed.

Not because I was half naked in a public place, because honestly, who hasn't been there, but because I was totally being a copy cat dirty rat.

That very night I went to see the new Sex and the City Movie and who should be looking down at me (in every way) from the silver screen, but the fabulous Liza Minelli herself and her two mini me back up dancers in my “pray that no-one sees me outfit”.

I am about to confess to three loves. One of which is secret and I will deny if asked about in public.

The first is not a secret and is shared by many.
Beyonce's Single Ladies is such a fun song and the version with the baby dancing in front of the TV - comic gold.

The second is also not a secret to those who know me:
Country boys. No explanation necessary.

The third is not something that I ever want my boyfriend to find out about. He would never let me live it down. (He knows about the aforementioned love - he is one).
Truth is, I love John Williamson. Always have. My childhood best friend and I used to put on backyard concerts, singing his songs in our off key, 6 year old harmonies. We rather enjoyed "Rip, Rip Woodchip" which pandered to our environmental sensibilities, but our personal (and of course, the crowd) favourite would have been "True Blue" with its reference to smoko. I love that term. My grandma, Sal, has always called morning tea; smoko.

You can imagine my utter delight when I saw all three combined this Saturday morning.

Cameos don't get much better than that (and they're all in Bonds wife beaters to boot)

They also played "Take it from me", by Girlfriend, not long after that little gem. Gerbera fronted pork pie hats, sunflowers placed chestacularly on a black vest and rose dotted ruffle shirts - bloomin' fantastic.

How gorgeous are these arrangements from this real wedding on Snippet and Ink? I am going to steal the idea.

So simple. The tray is a clever idea. It makes me want to position them as extra arrangements on side tables or random pillars (everyone has random pillars floating around their place don't they) and have a main table with a long row of the different shaped green bottles and lilies, moss and tealights.

I actually wanted this to be a nice post, but couldn't resist... I'm getting flash backs to working in the pub and doing a bit of glassy work, although in that case the tray would have the empty bottles, the curly moss/grass would be used serviettes and the calla lilies would most likely be spent cigarettes and their odourous plumes of smoke.

Mmmm, appetising.

You could have a caterpillar pinata and you could pin leaves on a tree instead of pin the tail on the donkey. At the end, all the kids could get butterfly wings.

I've had a VERY full last few weeks ( I just did a typo when I was writing that and it said "eeks" which I thought was quite apt).

I'd planned to get organised today, sorting out my photos and finds from my AWESOME trip to the Big Apple, but suprisingly, I didn't get round to it. I got myself a bit distracted and this was one of the reasons...

A quick check on Tastespotting brought me to Dreamy Dish and what sounds like an amazing recipe for a Lemon Cornmeal Cake. So, now at 12:15 am, I am waiting for it to come out of the oven so I can glaze it and take it to dinner at my folks tomorrw. I'll let you know how it goes...

On this very anniversary day, a white whale calf was spotted just off the coast at Head of Bight. I think he's a little good luck charm, an encouragement to keep on blogging.

So kids, what’s new with you?

As evidenced by my lack of posts the last couple of months, I’ve been a bit sidetracked lately.

I have been weighing up for a long time about whether to write anything about this, but the sun feels like its peeking through the clouds now and I’ve been told that sharing is what makes things better with me – so I am exorcising (and for those who know my mantra – “fitness is shitness”, this is a big thing)
… Oh the puns, I do crack myself up.

Anyhoo, a few months ago I fell into a bit of a hole that, at the time, felt bottomless.

So, this is a cute black dog peeking around the corner, but mine was sucky

I’ve truly never felt that way before and I must say it scared the bejesus out of me. On top of that I had work issues and relationship issues and blah, blah, blah

Then right in the middle of all this came the kicker…

My mum was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer.

Now, my mum Margaret (Margie to her sisters, Mutti to me) is a trooper.

She has handled all her treatments with absolute aplomb and a strength that has made me both beam with pride and bawl my eyes out at the same time.

She spent five weeks doing radiotherapy and chemo at the same time. She was given a jaunty bum bag to carry her chemo drugs with her at all times, which is supposed to make it less stressful on the body.

I laughed my arse off when I saw this picture of Madonna child shopping in Malawi as I never thought I’d see the day when my mother and the Queen of Pop were getting around in the same gear (I wouldn’t blink an eyelid if it was my father and the King of Pop; Michael Jackson – Dad’s love of surgical masks, sequinned gloves and military gloves is legendary)... BTW - that was a joke Brenton, we all know that all you share with MJ is a love of The Beatles as evidenced by this mighty Sgt Pepperesque mo.

Awww, young love. I think they're in their early 20's here

Mum got burns from the radiotherapy that sent her back into hospital, unable to walk, but as soon as they were under control, she was as bright and sunny as before again. It is an absolutely effed up situation, not being able to do anything for her, but it has made the family such a tight unit. I have never felt as close to my mum as I do now and I have so much respect for her.

Next week she goes into surgery to have the tumour removed and will have to have a colostomy bag for a few months, which she is already making jokes about.

I am in love with these paintings. The artist, Benedetta Borrometi, is originally from Rome, but is now based in Tokyo.

Her paintings exude a childlike exuberence that seems to spring from the clash of the two cultures.

I am so drawn to the sense of whimsy in her execution (mainly cos I love the word whimsy - its pure euphony) .Her use of non-traditional elements in her mixture of media, such as wall ornaments and vintage kimono fabric as below, just adds to their unique outlook.

Tuesday Tunesday - Hottest 100 2008

I meant to post this before the Hottest 100 was played on Australia Day, but I think its a vindication of my excellent taste that the 10 tunes for which I voted all fell within its top fifty.

Although I voted in no particular order, here is how they fell...

At number 43, was Ghosts by Laura Marling, which was a previous Tuesday Tunesday post

I so loved Soko's I'll Kill her and again was seduced by I will never love you more which came in at number 41

I channelled my inner emo at number 36, Death Cab for Cutie - I will possess your heart

So, I totally have a crush on all the boys in the Kooks - had to include them. They came in at number 33 with Always Where I need to be

I must admit, it was the filmclip that first made me love Vampire Weekend's A Punk, but its a really good song as well, hitting number 32 on the top 100.

I had to choose between the two Dizzee Rascal songs that I rock out to when I am driving, so I kept Flex as my car bopping little secret and voted for Dance with Me (obviously the girl in the filmclip has never heard Coco Chanel's infamous "Take one thing off before you leave the house")

Like Miss Kimberlalee, Ladyhawke's My Delirium causes me to bust some moves too. Must do so for the rest of Oz as well as it came in at number 11.

Jimmy Recard by Drapht reminds me of my workmate as she always gets us to turn it up loud when it comes on the radio. I'm sure she voted to get it to number 10.

Being a parochial South Aussie, I've always liked the Hilltop Hoods, but I'm only just getting into the whole Australian Hip Hop scene. As with the afore mentioned Drapht song, I tend to like songs with a sense of humour or something to which I can relate. I think almost anyone who has been to a music festival would love this song (they need to get a film clip together though). I actually thought The Festival Song by Pez would be number 2, but it ended up coming in at number 7.

And, at number 1, as very much expected, Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire. I wasn't going to vote for it because I thought it would get to number one without my help, but its such a damn good song, no matter how many times you hear it. Glad they are finally getting some of the recognition they deserve.

I just saw the Baz Luhrmann movie Australia and I was completely suckered in. The whole movie was one glorious cliche after another and it pushed every emotional button it could. And I LOVED every moment of it.

Brandon Walters was just beautiful. I really hope he lands another great film after this as he was a natural. He had me laughing and crying - I was a bloody emotional wreck because of him.

Nicole Kidman's wardrobe was heaven sent. It was all designed by Catherine Martin, who has used the Lady Sarah Ashley character as inspiration for a new, exclusive (and super expensive) line for RM Williams. Its all rather flamboyant and romantic and cos I'm still in the lovesick throes of the movie, I'm rather taken by it all.

This last dress costs $7,900. I didn't think you could buy anything in Oz for that much, but apart from that, I think its lovely.

The most exciting thing happened to me!!!!!!!! (I do not like exclamation marks, so that has got to be a good indication of how exciting it is!)

I got given an ipod touch!!

It has changed my life! I am a different person! I am way cooler for a start!

I loaded it up and culled songs that appeared across albums more than once, except for this one! I think it may be on there 3 times!

I love love love this song! (see how I did the 3 times thing there again!)

One afternoon in the unibar, my friends and I planned how we would make our own film clip, but several rounds of Pina Coladas later plans stalled, which sucks cos it would have been rad!!!

Here I am with my brothers Rowan to the left and Brad to the right.

I am a bit sad tonight as Rowan is leaving for Canada tomorrow morning. He has had a quarter life crisis and is taking the year off and going to work at Panorama Mountain resort to be a ski bunny. I am very jealous (although he is missing Summer), but I'm hoping to catch up with him next year in Vegas for my birthday. We've just gone out to tea to say goodbye and got the waitress to take a photo so he could have one of our cheesy mugs.

The little presents on the table are early Christmas presents I got for my bros. They were bottle opener rings and I think they are just the coolest things ever. I got each one engraved with "Moose Knuckle" which is a completely tasteless term of affection between us.

I think this is the perfect opportunity to pimp him out (hence the shopping list) as he will be in a different country when he reads this.

He is single, only slightly annoying these days and has the same warped sense of humour that I do, so if anyone is thinking of hitting the slopes up in British Columbia, look him up eh.

At uni, I would be struck down with the biggest cravings and we would have to do frog cake runs - which is not the easiest thing to do as I'm pretty sure they are only made once a week and not all delis stock them, so it was sometimes a hit and miss affair.

These gorgeous paintings by Dianne Gall would solve my craving problem forever, in fact I think I would be on a permanent sugar high. If they were still available for sale, I would so be breaking into my piggy bank right now.

My favourite chore is doing the laundry (only the washing bit though - not hanging it out, I would contribute greatly to the hole in the ozone layer if I had a dryer). I can only use one detergent and one fabric softener though as I'm a bit allergic to the rest. My mum changed it once when I was living at home and I came out in a rash, but they didn't link the change in washing powder with the little red spots and they thought I had scabies. Scabies! I was mortified!

I don't shrink stuff and colours rarely run, but I often forget to check pockets. I now have numerous tops that have holes in them from when there have been screws and nails hidden in a pair of work trousers.

So, I keep my eye out for cute badges and brooches to cover them. At the moment, I like rosettes.

I really love Good News Week. It is a terribly funny show and last week they were running an ad that had a line from the show and it made me double over every time I heard it. (Its in the first minute of Ep 4 if you did want to watch).
It was about a group of teenage girls in Sydney who were sunbaking with their mobile phone numbers in zinc across their back.

This utterly divine Celestina Abalone Clutch would set you back a measly $880 when it was for sale on Net-a-Porter (sold out now - booooo). So what is an enterprising young filly like me supposed to do when she NEEDS one?

Why, pop on her fancy diving gear, hop in the deep blue briny and get one for herself, of course. It would have totally complimented that outfit.

We actually got 10 of these in a dive over Christmas. They look awful, but are delicious when tenderised and done on the barbie in butter and garlic. Its was real treat as they are getting fished out in the waters at Yorkes because there is such high demand for them in asian markets.

FYI, no purse was actually borne of this underwater adventure. I think the shells got turned into ashtrays.

I really like Kate Richie. I think it would have been extremely hard growing up in front of the public eye on Home and Away. I also feel I have a bond with her as her original foster mum and I share the same name - that practically makes us related doesn't it?

But what has really endeared her to me in the last few years is that she has developed an excellent taste in fashion. The girl frocks good.

What Not to Wear - The Push Bike Edition

There is a gang of 6 fluoro clad fifty/sixty year old cyclists hanging out on the corner of my street at the moment. I applaud their attempts at staving off the effects of cholesterol and keeping the body healthy, its a very sensible approach to life, but what is with the full on professional bike jockey garb? Grab a T-shirt and some shorts and deal with the chafe. Lycra is wrong. WRONG. Wrong.

I spent my formative working years peddling (heh heh) videos at my local Blockbuster. I had one particular customer who fell into the afore mentioned age-group of cyclists and would come in to the store in his tight spandex suit. Now this was bad enough in itself, but the kicker was that this guy only hired porn. Herein lay the problem; when someone is wearing bike shorts, you need to stare them in the face and when someone is hiring porn, you cannot look them in the eye. You may have been wondering what Bella had been up to on our blogging break (are you scared because I can see into your mind?). Well, she had her first ever visit to a Dog Salon. Now, the quality of her cut was excellent, but I didn't describe very well to the groomers that Bella didn't "do" the normal poodle cut.

Here is what she looked like before (please note, I do not dress her in bandannas, she had just had a visit to the vet for some shots)

and this is her haircut... Dog people love their bandannas...Poor thing, I couldn't stop laughing at her. She looks like Mike Brady. I felt I had to apologise to everyone who saw her and explain that she was normally really cute. I had to get the scissors out and toughen her up a bit - punk style.

Aquarium puts 'fat' dolphins on diet

A Japanese aquarium is putting its dolphins on a diet after their portly figures got in the way of their water tricks.
"These days animals at the sealand are a bit ... fat," a zookeeper confided on the website of Kinosaki Marine World in western Hyogo prefecture.
Audiences have apparently noticed, with the dolphins failing to jump into the air as high as before, he said.
"But we ask you, please be lenient with them as they are making efforts to lose weight," he said.
The problem lies in their diet of mackerels, which are popular at this time of year in Japan.
Mackerels are known in Japan for their rich taste but also their high fat content.
"We are trying to make them return to their best weight by feeding them other kinds of fish with less fat or by offering fewer mackerels," the zookeeper said.

Adelaide is the tiniest town - its not six degrees of separation here, more like three. You do anything and everyone knows about it. Normally this doesn't work in your favour, but if you do something newsworthy, expect it to be shouted from the rooftops.

So here's props to a friend of a friend of mine (I have vague recollections of her from backyard parties) who now lives in Sydney. She has started a great little business that is doing really well in this newly environmentally aware market. Its called bagladies and it specialises in cute alternatives to those green supermarket bags.

This one, undercover greenie, is exactly the same size as those infamous Coles bags and is only $4.95.

Hide and Seek Inspiration

I've kind of been in hiding, a hibernation of sorts.
I was going through one of those self doubt periods where I overthink everything and I decided to take a bit of a break from the blogging world - I didn't like the feeling of it all becoming a chore rather than fun.
I now feel completely out of the loop as I haven't read any of my "daily fixes" in ages, so bear with me as I get back into it all.
I did get back to where I wanted to be though and realised that the reason I started doing this was to share the cool stuff I'd come across with my friends and in the last few weeks this really hit home as I'd see something and the first thing I thought about was "putting it in the blog".
So, its wake up time - I hope to have a lot of eye-opening finds and mind expanding ideas from now on.
I'll leave it to the Wiggles to bring this home.

I did not realise how deliciously sinful diet-wise cheesecake actually could be, 'til I made my first one from scratch (not packet) for Father's Day dinner this weekend. Everyone ate it and my brothers did not pull faces like they were dying from the agony of it all, so I think it worked. I used this recipe from Notebook magazine. My fave part of it was the passionfruit curd which I had made once before and it worked beautifully - this time, not so good, but no-one seemed to notice.

Passionfruit Curd Cheesecake

250g butternut biscuits

200g digestive biscuits

120g butter, melted

500g cream cheese, at room temperature

1/2 cup (100g) caster sugar

300g sour cream

2 eggs

1 tsp finely grated lemon rind

Passionfruit curd

2 passionfruit

50g butter

2 eggs, lightly whisked

1/2 cup (100g) caster sugar

1 tbs lemon juice

Line the base of a 20cm (base measurement) springform pan with baking paper. Place the biscuits in a food processor and process until finely crushed. Add the butter and process until well combined. Transfer mixture to the pan and use a glass to press the crumb mixture firmly over the base and side of the pan. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes to set.

In the meantime, to make the passionfruit curd, place passionfruit pulp, butter, eggs, sugar and lemon juice in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until mixture boils and thickens. Remove from heat and set aside for 30 minutes to cool.

Preheat oven to 160°C. Use an electric mixer to beat cream cheese and sugar in a bowl until smooth. Add the sour cream and beat until smooth. Add eggs and lemon rind and beat until just combined.

Pour half the cream cheese mixture into the biscuit base. Dollop spoonfuls of half the passionfruit curd over the cream cheese. Pour over remaining cream cheese and dollop half of the remaining curd. Use a bamboo skewer to gently swirl passionfruit mixture and cream cheese to make a marbled pattern.

Place on an oven tray. Bake in oven for 45 minutes or until centre is just set. (here is where I went wrong - make sure you oven is on the cooking setting, not the defrost setting when you go to check your cheesecake 45 minutes later). Turn oven off. Leave cheesecake in the oven, with the door ajar, for 1 hour or until cooled completely. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and place in the fridge to chill. Spread over remaining curd to serve. Shovel into mouth like the little piggy you know you are.

There was the most gorgeous wicker shopper from Vicino in Sydney. I couldn't find a pic online so I did a bit of a search and came across these lovelies that I would be quite happy to have trailing behind me while I'm choosing my bananas.

Orla Kiely Pear Trolley from here. I want one. No, I'll take a pair (geddit -pear, heh heh)English Rose Trolley from here. Also good for when you need to hide your shopping in your neighbour's garden.

Trixie shopper from here. As above, but substitute garden for flannelette sheets.
